Have you ever asked yourself …Am I doing this right ?… Is this helping my kids?… Why am I doing this ?… Am I doing enough ?… I don’t understand this ?…. This is just too hard !!!
I’ve had these sorts of conversations with myself many times over. Usually, at bedtime, I lay awake for hours just going over the day and dissecting every moment where I could have explained things better, used a nicer tone, been a little more positive…blah blah blah.
The simple fact is we all experience this sort of negative head talk sometimes and if you are anything like me I usually convince myself that I should just give up. That it’s all too hard and stressful and that I should go back to packing lunchboxes and ironing school uniforms and let the education of my kids be the responsibility of a university-educated graduate.
Well, this was the beginning of my homeschooling Mum days and we all know beginnings are hard.
Self-doubt and negative head talk foster further insecurities but how do we make it stop?
I recommend that you develop a little self-mantra. So for every negative thought follow it with a positive thought, affirmation or mantra.
Here are a few of my own:
I can do this – I am enjoying time with my kids – I am fortunate to be able to do this – I am worthy – I am patient – I am Calm and I am confident in my abilities – I am a loving and kind mother to my children.
Have faith in yourself and believe that you can do this and be great at it…You are a Homeschool Super Hero !!!!!
I can assure you that your confidence will naturally grow if you are mindful of doing this when that doubt overwhelms you. Add a little deep breathing for about 15 seconds and repeat your mantra a few times.
You will be surprised as to how it can make you feel. Given time and persistence, the negativity and the meltdowns will become fewer. The fear of failure and self-doubt will slowly dissipate and you and your kids will definitely see and feel the difference.
It’s also important to be mindful that this self-doubt may also be present in your kids. They will also have days when they feel it’s all just too hard. Perhaps the day started badly with no milk for breakfast or books misplaced then little things just escalated through the day.
It’s at times like these we can be role models for them and lead the way and teach them that there is a way to change our moods and our thought patterns. Thinking negatively is a choice…so we also have the choice to change them with distractions and new positive thought patterns.
Allow your kids to write their own self-mantras, perhaps print them out and place them somewhere they can visually see them throughout the day. This is another great little activity you can all do together…

This is the book I wrote to my younger self about doing it successfully. Take it from someone who has been there.
It is everything I have learned from my 18 years as a full-time educator, mum, and housewife.
